Vintage Jewelry, Plastics

 Hi Everyone!

Let me begin by wishing all of you a very Happy New Year!  Wow, did 2021 fly by or what?!?  I pray wonderful blessings for each and every one of you in 2022!

Now let's talk some plastics, vintage plastic jewelry that is.  When I opened my vintage Etsy shop in the Summer of 2013 I knew nothing about vintage jewelry.  I am still no expert by any means, but I have learned a few things in the past 8.5 years.  I have also discovered the plastics are some of my favorite pieces.  I think it is the bright colors mixed with the variety.  From bakelite to lucite to figural pieces, it has definitely found a warm spot in my heart.

In my Etsy shop, The Velvet Flea, you can find a nice variety of lovely and fun vintage plastic pieces.  I usually always have some Bakelite and Lucite pieces hanging out, along with some other interesting and unique items.  If you are a collector, or know one, you will definitely find something to love.  Let's start with a fun retro set of interchangeable doorknocker earrings by Kenneth Lane.

Vintage Bakelite Doorknocker Earrings by Kenneth Lane

Look how fun this set is!  By designer Kenneth J. Lane, you cannot go wrong with these earrings.  Six sets of interchangeable doorknocker hoops in wonderful, yummy bakelite colors.  These are perfect for a stylish retro or Rockabilly fashion look.  There is banana yellow, bright orange, olive green, and some marbled colors.  Loving those mustard spinach hoops, yeah!  As of this moment, you can snag this great set in my shop, don't miss out!

Now let's move onto a really lovely and unique piece made from celluloid.  Below is a brooch that caught my eye as soon as I laid eyes on it.  It is larger in size at 2.75" long, and is dated back to the 1960s, possibly 50s.  The celluloid plastic flowers have elaborate swirling petals in white and purple colors.  The addition of the metal leaves tops off the special look of this piece.

This next piece will combine celluloid and bakelite together in a unique and fun necklace.  Dated in the 1950s, the chain links are made from celluloid plastic with a rounded off triangle pendant made in an apple juice bakelite color.  The topper is the inlaid rhinestone gems within the pendant.  How great is this?!  Fabulous piece for a collector.  This amazing necklace is available in my Etsy shop at this very moment.

For our last piece we must visit the Lucite bangle side of life.  Lucite is another plastic that is very durable and used to make beautiful items.  On occasion I come across gorgeous lucite handbags and list them in my shop.  They are so highly collectible they sell almost the second I list them.  I do not have any purses at the moment, but I do have several pieces of great lucite jewelry.  Take this scrumptious looking bangle for example.  In the yummiest of caramel colors with a wavy rectangle design, it almost looks good enough to bite into!

Now you can see why vintage plastic jewelry fascinates me.  I have not even scratched the surface of the fabulousness of it!  There are so, so many beautiful and unique pieces.  If you are not already a fan or collector, I hope I have piqued your interest to look into the vast array of these amazing costume jewelry fashion items.  There are also belts, handbags, shoes, and more, the possibilities are endless!
